Bioenterics Intra-Gastric Balloon or BIB

Endoscopic insertion – No incisions or scars

A silicon balloon (Intragastric balloon, BIB) is placed via the mouth into the stomach and inflated. The position is then checked with the endoscope and the inflation tube removed. The normal volume of the stomach is 1.5 l. The volume of the balloon is 0.5 l. The Intra-gastric Balloon makes you feel full after only a little food. The balloon has to be removed after 6 months, also via an endoscope. Following removal of the intra-gastric balloon, up to 40% will remain at the reduced weight.

Endoscopic Intra-Gastric Balloon
Difficult decision? In general, higer BMI patients would benefit from the lapband© as they need to lose more weight. Lower BMI patients cannot be offered a band and usually need only lose a few kg.

Sometimes, patients who are undecided opt for a balloon first and proceed for banding if the results of the balloon are not up to their expctations.

Patients with very high BMI are also sometimes offered the intra-gastric balloon first to make them medically fit to undergo the lapband ©.

Salient differences include: 1. Lapband © is keyhole surgery, balloon is endoscopic. 2. Lapband © is permanent, balloon is temporary. 3. Cost differences SGD 8,000 vs SGD 16,000 for the Lapband ©.
