1. Pre Lapband workup - What to expect?
  Evaluation for LapBand. Counseling on Lap Band System, obesity, expectations, risks and complications.
Physical examination. Tests. (Please come fasted overnight or for 8 hours before blood tests) Additional tests depending on need. Overnight sleep study. Spirometry. Treadmill or CT angiogram. Referrals to Dietician, Endocrinologist, Respiratory, Psychiatric and Cardiology if needed

Confirmation for Lap Band Surgery
Your medical conditions will usually be controlled by this time and all your test results ready. You will be given a date and time for admission. If you are found to have sleep apnoea, you may have to use a Home-CPAP
breathing machine at night for 1 week.

You will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of preoperative counselling form and be given an opportunity
to ask questions.
     
2. Hospitalisation for Lapband
  You will be admitted on the day of surgery. The operation will take about 1-1 ½ hours and you will go back to your room or High Dependancy area overnight. You can only have sips of water and asked to move around. The next morning, you will have a contrast x-ray and if that is alright, you can start drinking. You can be discharged the
same day and you will have to be on liquids for the next 7 days. You will have to walk 1-2 km a day and are encouraged to be active. Medical leave usually ranges from 1-2 weeks.
     
3. Post Lapband Eating
  Healing Phase (4 weeks)
– To protect the stitches holding the band in place.
First 10-days
  • All liquids- water, coffee, tea, clear soup, creamy soup, thin milk shakes, flavoured milk, soyabean milk
  • No solids or particles- everything you drink must be able to pass through a seive
  • Drink slowly. Stop when you are full. Do not worry about hunger, the band will make you feel full.
     
  Second 10-days (day 10 to 20)
  • All Liquids.
  • Puree (blend) all foods. This includes porridge, soupy noodles, cereal drinks, soups with minced meat and vegetables. The puree can then be eaten with a spoon.
  • Eat slowly. Stop when you are full. Do not worry about hunger, the band will make you feel full.
     
  Third 10-days (day 20 to 30)
  • Porridge, soupy noodles, cereal drinks, soups with minced meat and vegetables, softly mashed potatoes
can be eaten with a spoon. Blending (puree) is not required..
  • Drink slowly. Stop when you are full. Do not worry about hunger, the band will make you feel full.
     
  The Rest Of Your Life- 10 COMMANDMENTS OF EATING
  1. Eat s.l.o.w.l.y. and c.h.e.w. well
  2. Stop when you are full
  3. Eat 3 meals a day. You do not need to snack between meals – the lap band will keep you happy
  4. Eat foods that are as solid as you can tolerate – they will keep you full for longer
  5. Do not drink water or soups just before and after meals. Fluids will wash the meal down, making you feel
hungry again.
  6. Do not take sweet drinks, ice cream or chocolate – they have a lot of calories and will pass through the band easily
  7. Do not over-eat then vomit – vomiting may cause slippage.
  8. A small amount of alcohol is permitted –alcohol is very high in calories
  9. Avoid buffets – you will tend to over eat
  10. Take your multi-vitamins every day
     
4. Post Lapband Exercise
  Healing Phase
  • Walk 1 km every day, building up to 2 km gradually for 2 weeks, accompanied
  • Gradually increase to a brisk walk
  • You should be able to start jogging or resume your normal exercises by 1 month
  • Those with knee or back problems may have to go more slowly
     
  The rest of your life
  1. Exercise at least 3 times a week
  2. Depending on your age, medical conditions and joints, this may be brisk walking, jogging or a sport like
tennis or badminton
  3. Take up new sports
  4. Be active and adventurous
  5. Lap band increases the possibilities- with the weight loss, increased fitness and new appearance,
activities like swimming , cycling, water skiing and roller blading are now possible
     
5. Post Lapband Pregnancy
  • You can become pregnant after Lap Band
  • Lap Band improves fertility and makes pregnancy less complicated
  • However- do not become pregnant for 1½ years following surgery till your weight loss has stabilised.
See a gynaecologist for contraception.
  • Inform your surgeon when you are pregnant so he can loosen the band and you can have a normal
weight gain during pregnancy
  • You will gain about 10 kg during the pregnency
  • You will have the Lap band re-tightened after delivery and you will lose all that weight again
